The Item Type Catalog

Your Organization's Item Types and Fields are managed from Settings → Catalog. This is where you shape the taxonomy your Items get classified into.

Browsing your catalog​

Settings → Catalog → Types shows your Organization's full Item Type hierarchy as an indented, expandable tree — both the global types you're using (from the library or the seeded "Uncategorized" fallback) and any custom types your Organization has defined. Opening a Type shows its detail page: its position in the hierarchy, its full effective field list (its own fields plus everything inherited, each labeled with which ancestor defined it), and, if Labels have been set up, which label template it resolves to.

Settings → Catalog → Fields lists every Field your Organization has defined or has access to, independent of which Types use them — useful for browsing/editing a Field directly rather than via a specific Type.

Creating a custom Type​

From the Types page, create a new Type by giving it a name and, optionally, a parent Type — global or your own Organization's. Choosing a parent means your new Type automatically inherits every field that parent (and its own ancestors) already defines. A Type can also be marked abstract if it exists purely to organize the hierarchy and shouldn't be assignable to an actual Item directly (see Item Types & Fields).

Attaching Fields to a Type​

From a Type's detail page, attach an existing Field (searchable by name) or create a brand-new one inline without leaving the page — just its label and kind (text, number, select, unit value, etc.) are needed to get started. For each attached field you can set:

  • Whether it's required.
  • A default value (which, combined with "required," means the field is always populated without forcing a value to be typed every time — see Item Types & Fields).
  • Its display order relative to the type's other fields.

Deleting Types and Fields​

A Type or Field can't be deleted while it's still in active use — still assigned to at least one Item, still has sub-types, or (for a Field) is still attached to any Type. This is intentional: unlike deleting a Space or Location (which cascades and deletes everything inside), pruning a taxonomy node is never allowed to silently destroy real inventory records. Reassign or remove the things using it first, or leave it in place.

Global (library) Types and Fields can never be edited or deleted directly — they're a shared, read-only baseline. You can always create your own sub-type or custom field alongside them instead.

The Item Type Library​

Beyond the small set of starter categories offered during onboarding, Ohmventory ships a much larger Item Type Library — a browsable, pre-built set of category templates spanning electronics, hardware, tools, general household goods, plumbing, automotive, office supplies, clothing, media, and more, each with sensible fields already defined and linked to real Units & Dimensions where relevant.

From Settings → Catalog → Types → Browse library, you can explore the full library tree and import any category (and its whole sub-tree) into your Organization's catalog at any time — not just during onboarding. Importing is additive: it adds the category's Types and Fields to what you already have without removing or resetting anything.
